Spring 2020 Application for Graduation

  • 17 January 2020

All students who plan to graduate in May 2020 must submit an application for graduation to Academic Services (room 204) by January 31, 2020.  A copy of this graduation application  may also be obtained from the Academic Services Office in suite 204 or found under the Forms link on the Academic Service page of the TLS Intranet.   The completed application may be emailed to lawacademicservices@tulane.edu or turned in to Academic Services in suite 204.

The application for graduation must be received in order for a diploma to be ordered and for the degree checkout to be completed.

Degrees will be conferred on May 16, 2020 (note previous email below regarding the commencement ceremony information).  Please see https://commencement.tulane.edu/ for information regarding the commencement schedule and activities.

Diplomas will not be distributed at the respective graduation ceremonies, but rather mailed to individual students, arriving three to five weeks after commencement. Please make sure to provide a diploma mailing address on the graduation application form.  Graduates will have their names called during the law graduation ceremony, they will walk across the stage, receive a blank diploma cover/tube, and enjoy a photo opportunity.

For JD and LLM graduates: at the time that the graduation application is submitted we will collect information from you to order your graduation regalia.  Since the cost for the graduation regalia is incorporated into the tuition/fee amount students have already been assessed there will be no additional charge for the regalia, and the Law School will order the regalia for these students participating in graduation.

PhD and SJD degree candidates, as well as Master of Jurisprudence candidates who plan to participate in commencement, will be able to order their graduation regalia from the Tulane University Bookstore during Grad Fest.   Grad Fest will take place on March 11th and 12th.  More information regarding Grad Fest will be available soon.

Please contact Academic Services if you have any questions about the commencement activities.

Fall class rankings posted

  • 15 January 2020

The 2L and 3L Fall class rankings are now posted. Students should be able to view their rankings by logging on to Gibson and selecting the link for Law Ranks under the Law School Services heading.

Only students who have completed a full-time law term during the fall semester will have a class rank posted. Those students will have a term rank (indicative of only the fall semester grades) and a cumulative rank (reflects the cumulative law average) indicated.   Joint degree students will not have a law rank posted if they were not primarily enrolled at the law school during the fall term.

Please note that transfer students do not have a class rank at this time. The first time that transfer students receive a cumulative rank will be following the fall term of the 3L year. Information regarding class rankings may be found in Section IV.M of the Student Handbook.

First year students will have class rank posted upon completion of the academic year.   LLM students are not ranked.

Updates to Spring 2020 course schedule

  • 8 January 2020

There have been several updates to the spring course schedule including room changes for some courses.   Please make sure to reference the updated version of the registration materials which is posted on the Academic Services page of the TLS Intranet.    Changes to the registration materials will be indicated in red

Please note in particular the following:

1)            We have re-designated the Contemporary Issues in Legal Ethics course as a seminar for the Spring 2020 term. Papers for this course may be submitted in satisfaction of the upper-class writing requirement upon the approval of the Vice Dean.”

2)            We are adding the following mini-course to the Spring 2020 term:

EU Competition (Antitrust) Law

MINI5490-01 (CRN: 47736)

MTWR – 11:30-12:56; F 9:30-11:45

March 9 – April 3

Exam date: April 13

The course will consider a critical area of European Union business law: competition/antitrust law.  It begins with a sketch of European Union law with specific reference to how the Union regulates trade, corporate establishment and the institutions that enforce these policies.  It then turns to the two relevant European Union treaty articles: Article 101, which governs multi-firm conduct (agreements between business entities), and Article 102, which observes single firm conduct (abuse of dominant position).  It is not necessary to have taken either Antitrust or European Business Law to enroll in the course.  The course will be taught by Professor Lloyd Bonfield (New York Law School); Marc Firestone (President—External Affairs and General Counsel, Philip Morris International) may be available to participate in one or two classes.”

Although 1L students do not receive a class rank in the fall semester, we do offer the following quartile information so that first year students may gauge how they are performing.

The following is for informational purposes only:

25% - 3.668
33% - 3.594
50% - 3.309
75% - 2.974

Please contact Academic Services at lawacademicservices@tulane.edu if you have questions about this information.
